Sports and Recreation Rules and Guidelines

Sports and Recreation has established rules and guidelines for patrons to comply with when using the recreation facilities. Patrons that fail to follow any of the department’s policies, rules and guidelines may result in suspension of access to the recreational facilities and programs.

Failure to comply with the instructions of department staff, displaying unruly behavior or misuse of equipment may result in suspension of facility access, referral to Student Conduct and Academic Integrity and/or the Department of Public Safety.

    • All students, faculty, staff, members and guests must present a KSU ID or government issued photo ID to enter the facilities
    • All patrons must have a current signed waiver on file prior to entry
    • Patrons without the above written requirements must have an escort from a Department of Sports and Recreation representative
    • Patrons and guests must be at least 17 years of age, except for Recreation-approved programs
    • Personal belongings must be stored in a locker. Belongings not secured will be collected by staff and stored at the Service Desk
    • The Department of Sports and Recreation is not responsible for lost or stolen items
    • Lockers are for day use only. Contents left overnight will be removed and stored in lost and found
    • Shirt, shorts/pants and closed-toed shoes are required
    • Personal music must be listened to only via headphones
    • Report any malfunctions to staff with an equipment number for quick reference
    • Re-rack weights after use.
    • Immediately report any injuries, facility issues, misconduct, or unsafe behaviors or items to facility staff
    • Use of the Activity Rooms are permitted for recreation programs or approved activities
    • When using specific recreation space, specific recreation/sport activity will have priority of use

    Prohibited Activities and Items

    • Alcohol or tobacco products
    • Weapons or firearms -
    • Personal instruction and/or training conducted by non-Department of Sports and Recreation staff*
    • Animals, except service animals
    • Photography and filming without the written approval
    • Glass containers, food, spitting or gum*
    • Moving equipment from designated areas*
    • Any activities Sports & Recreation staff deem unsafe
    • Damaging, defacing and/or vandalizing Sports & Recreation facilities

    *Exceptions may be permitted with prior reservation and/or Sports & Recreation consent in designated areas of the facility

    • Immediately report any injury or facility problems to facility staff
    • Report all un-retrievable equipment to the Service Desk
    • Roller skating permitted in this area
    • All general facility rules apply

    Prohibited Activities/Items

    • Sitting or climbing on collapsed bleachers
    • Pucks
    • Throwing objects against the wall/lights/fans/bleachers
    • Personal belongings must be stored in a locker or cubbies
    • The intended sport has priority of use on particular sport courts
    • Goggles or eye protection lenses is required at all times
    • 4 player maximum per court
    • All racquets must have wrist straps attached and in use
    • All general rules apply
    • Courts may be closed at any time due to safety concerns or inclement weather
    • Please contact Service Desk for lost equipment
    • Rinse off sand prior to entering the pool
    • All general rules apply

    Prohibited Activities/Items

    • Rinsing sand off in the pool
    • Climbing the fence
    • Standing on furniture 
    • All personal belongings must be stored in a locker
    • Only two (2) runners or walkers permitted side by side
    • Outside lanes are designated for walkers and the inside lanes are designated for joggers and runners
    • Follow directional signage
    • Stretching is permitted in the corners of the track
    • All general rules apply

    Prohibited Activities/Items

    • Fitness equipment on the track (i.e. kettlebells & dumbbells)
    • Spiked shoes, turf shoes, or open-toed shoes
    • Standing on the track to watch activities on the 4-Court Gym
    • Personal belongings on the track
    • Dispose of trash and waste in the appropriate bins
    • Return furniture to their original placement
    • All general rules apply
    • The Department of Sports and Recreation is not responsible for lost or stolen items
    • Report any misconduct to the facility staff
    • Children 3 years of age or older and of a different gender from their parent/guardian are recommended to use the Family Changing Rooms
    • No filming or photography allowed in locker rooms or restrooms
    • All general rules apply
    • Be mindful of other waiting for equipment and limit exercises to thirty (30) minutes
    • Report any malfunctions to staff and include the equipment number on the machines for quick reference
    • Re-rack weights to proper locations after use
    • Collars are required for bar use
    • Ask a fellow patron or staff member to spot for heavy lifts
    • All general facility rules apply

    Prohibited Activities/Items

    • Wiping (cleaning) of cardio equipment screens
    • Dropping weights
    • Leaning or stretching on equipment, where applicable
    • Chalk use
    • Black rubber-coated plated used for floor exercises (i.e. dead lifts)
    • All powerlifting bars must remain in this area
    • Collars are required for use on the bars
    • Report any malfunctions to staff with an equipment number for quick reference
    • Dropping weights is permitted in a controlled manner
    • Be mindful of others waiting for equipment and limit exercises to thirty (30) minutes
    • Re-rack weights to proper location after use
    • Ask staff for guidance on proper equipment use
    • All general rules apply

    • Courts should be free of any bags, bottles or other objects that could interfere with safe court use

    • Only swim when a KSU lifeguard is on duty
    • Shower before entering the pool and after use of lavatories
    • Rinse sand off before entering the pool
    • Wear proper swim attire
    • Stay in the shallow end of the pool if you cannot swim; guards may ask patrons to take a 25-yard swim test, before entering the deep end
    • Dispose of gum and band-aids before entering the water
    • Share pool lanes during peak times of high occupancy
    • Children under 3 years of age and not toilet trained must wear swim diapers
    • Only children 3 years of age or younger and of a different a gender from their parent/guardian, may enter locker rooms with that parent/guardian
    • Children under 18 years must always be accompanied by a parent/guardian; a ratio of one parent/guardian per four children 13 years of age and under must be present
    • Children who cannot swim must always be within an arm’s reach of a parent/guardian in the shallow end; there must be one parent/guardian per child who cannot swim in the water
    • Inclement Weather: The Aquatics Center will close for 30 minutes for each lightning/thunder that is seen/heard

    Prohibited Activities/Items

    • Dangerous practices and behaviors that include but are not limited to:
      • Running on the deck
      • Pushing, shoving, horseplay, or inappropriate behavior
      • Diving into the shallow end of the pool
      • Breath holding training, drills and exercises
      • Backward dives and flips
      • Hanging on lane ropes or handrails
    • Coaching, teaching, instruction, and personal training by non-Recreation staff
    • Diaper/clothes changing on the pool deck
    • Rude or disrespectful behavior to any staff member
    • Food and drink in the aquatic facility, except for water-filled plastic bottles
    • Cellphone or camera use inside of the locker rooms or restrooms
    • Climbers should remain out of fall zones unless they are climbing. While observing, climbers may sit on the back edge of the crash pad.
    • Climbers should not be inverted on the wall or hangboard hips directly over head).
    • Climbers should not walk between a belayer and the route their climber is on.
    • Shoes must be worn at all times. Climbers should abide by the dress code set by the SRAC. Only climbing shoes or athletic shoes are to be worn while climbing. Prohibited shoes for climbing include: flip flops, sandals, hiking boots, five finger shoes.
    • Climbers should not attempt to top out on the boulder.
    • Climbers down climb from the boulder whenever possible in order to reduce the height of their fall.
    • Bouldering on the tower is permitted up to the marked height. Climbers should not pass this height with their head.
    • Climbers must use KSU hardware and ropes for climbing on the tower. You may use your own harness, however any personal safety gear is subject to a safety inspection by Climbing Gym Staff.  Climbing Gym Staff may prohibit the use of a harness based on his/her safety inspection of the item.
    • Climbers are to notify staff if they suspect a piece of gear is damaged or unsafe for climbing for any reason. This includes ropes, hardware, holds that are cracked or spinning, harnesses, and anything else that concerns the patron. Climbers should report lead falls to the Climbing Gym Staff so that may document the fall and inspect the rope that was used.
    • All personal possessions such as jewelry, watches, necklaces, rings, excessively loose clothing, earrings etc., should be removed when climbing or belaying. Long hair must be pulled back. Possessions should be stored under the provided bench. The Climbing Gym is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
    • Belayers must be Top Rope Belay qualified to check out harnesses and belay devices.
    • Climbers and belayers are to double check each other for safety before climbing. If the climber is not Top Rope Belay Qualified, he/she may still climb. In this case, the Climbing Gym Attendant will be the person to double check for safety.
    • For lead climbing, the climber and belayer must be Lead Climbing Qualified before checking out a lead rope or quickdraws.
    • No food or drink is allowed in the Climbing Gym except water. Water is not permitted on the red tile floor.
    • All general rules apply. 

    Any infractions of these policies may result in the suspension from the KSU climbing gym. Please direct any questions to the Senior Coordinator of Outdoor Adventures.

    • Use of these spaces is only permitted for OwlFit-approved activities
    • Only the OwlFit staff may use the stereo equipment
    • Personal belongings should be stored in a locker prior to the start of class
    • Report injuries and facility or equipment problems to the Department of Sports and Recreation staff immediately
    • Use a weight that you can safely lower to the floor or ask for assistance.
    • Wipe down equipment before and after use
    • Appropriate athletic attire is required - participants are expected to wear appropriate closed-toed athletic shoes for group fitness classes. The exception would be at the direction of the instructor and/or during mind and body classes.
    • Participants are strongly recommended to bring a personal exercise towel and water bottle
    • All general rules apply

    Prohibited Activities/Items

    • Patrons are not permitted to use equipment in the studios outside of OwlFit programs
    • DO NOT drop dumbbells or other equipment on the floors as it may cause damage.
  • Weight Area

    • All powerlifting bars must remain in this area
    • Collars are required for use on the bars
    • Report any malfunctions to staff with an equipment number for quick reference
    • Dropping weights is permitted in a controlled manner
    • Be mindful of others waiting for equipment and limit exercises to thirty (30) minutes
    • Re-rack weights to proper locations after use
    • Chalk is permitted in this area
    • Ask staff for guidance on proper equipment use
    • All general rules apply

    Cardio Area

    • Be mindful of others waiting for equipment and limit exercises to thirty (30) minutes
    • Report any malfunctions to staff and include the equipment number on the machines for quick reference

    • Wiping/cleaning of cardio equipment screens
    • Leaning or stretching on equipment, where applicable
    • Chalk use

    Netted Area

    • Indoor Tire flipping only permitted after 5:00pm; Any other time this must be done outside
    • Gymnastics mats may only be used for scheduled club sports practice
    • All general rules apply

    Prohibited Activities/Items

    • Throwing of any objects (ex. lacrosse balls, footballs, etc)
    • Fields may be closed at any time due to safety concerns
    • No food or liquids other than water allowed on fields
    • KSU ID and completed waiver/release form required for access and drop-in play.
    • University policies and procedures must be adhered to at all times.
    • There must be a minimum of six patrons for drop-in play for field lights to be turned on.
    • Rules such as no tobacco or alcohol, no pets, no spitting, no gum or sunflower seeds, etc. are posted at the fields and will be enforced by staff.
    • No food or drink on synthetic turf. Food and drink are only allowed in designated areas.
    • No objects such as stakes or signs may be inserted into the synthetic turf.
    • Athletes, coaches, and officials only are allowed on synthetic turf fields for competitions.
    • Spectators must remain in designated spectator areas.
    • KSU ID and completed waiver/release form required for access and drop-in play.
    • University policies and procedures must be adhered to at all times.
    • There must be a minimum of six patrons for drop-in play for field lights to be turned on.
    • Rules such as no tobacco or alcohol, no pets, no spitting, no gum or sunflower seeds, etc. are posted at the fields and will be enforced by staff.
    • No food or drink on synthetic turf. Food and drink are only allowed in designated areas.
    • No objects such as stakes or signs may be inserted into the synthetic turf.
    • Athletes, coaches, and officials only are allowed on synthetic turf fields for competitions.
    • Spectators must remain in designated spectator areas.
    • Walk/jog/run trail closes at sundown and during inclement weather.
    • Only authorized activities may take place at the lake.
    • Pets are allowed on the walk/jog/run trail and must be on a leash at all times.
