Bachelor of Music

The Bachelor of Music (B.M.) in Music degree is offered with concentrations in Composition, Performance, and Music Theory. 

Composition

A Bachelor of Music in Composition prepares students for careers as music creators across a wide range of media in the concert hall and beyond. The program includes extensive study of compositional techniques and styles, combining classroom learning with applied composition lessons. In addition to composition studies, students will develop their performance skills through active participation in applied lessons and ensembles, and the overall music curriculum includes comprehensive coursework in music theory, aural skills, music history and literature, musical analysis, keyboard proficiency, and music electives. 


These studies culminate in a portfolio of original works that highlight each student’s unique creative voice and equip students with the musical, collaborative, and leadership skills necessary for successful careers as composers, arrangers, or entrepreneurs in the music field.

The Bachelor of Music in Performance program offers specializations in instrumental performance, jazz performance, vocal performance, and piano performance. Students in these programs receive comprehensive training and mentorship from world-class faculty, honing their artistic expression, technical precision, and musicianship skills. The programs include rigorous coursework in music theory, aural skills, music history, and literature, as well as specialized classes. Students have the opportunity to perform as soloists, ensemble members, and in larger musical settings, gaining hands-on experience and developing a distinct voice in their craft. Graduates are well-prepared to pursue diverse career paths, excel in the world of music, and continue their studies at the graduate level.

Music Theory

A Bachelor of Music in Music Theory is designed to prepare students for careers as scholars, educators, and composers, offering an in-depth exploration of the intricate patterns that form the foundation of music. This degree provides a comprehensive study of musical structures, developing skills in piano, voice, and other instruments while refining abilities in scholarly research, writing, and composition across various musical styles. Through personalized instrumental or vocal instruction and active participation in performance ensembles, students develop a rich, multifaceted understanding of music, preparing them to lead and innovate in academic and professional settings.

A Bachelor of Music Education shapes the next generation of leading music educators, equipping students with the skills and knowledge to inspire and teach as exemplary band, orchestra, choir, or general music teachers. This professional degree offers a clear path to P-12 teacher certification in Georgia, ensuring graduates are ready to be impactful in the classroom. Throughout the program, students receive personalized instruction and engage in ensembles that enhance their musical proficiency. The curriculum is a comprehensive blend of artistry, pedagogy, and general musicianship, designed to create impactful educators adept in both theory and practice. 


The capstone of this journey is a semester of student teaching, where students step into classrooms, applying their learning under the mentorship of seasoned educators and our exceptional faculty. With specialized concentrations in Choral, General, Instrumental, and Orchestra education, students benefit from the guidance of experts dedicated to their success. Minor in Music

The Bailey School of Music offers an 18-credit music minor open to all students, regardless of their major. Our program includes instrumental or vocal lessons, ensemble experiences, and music theory and musicianship classes. This minor is the perfect way to enrich your university experience and incorporate artistic elements into your studies.
