The first semester of college is a time of transition and growth as students spread their wings and begin to navigate their academic careers, discover new interests and make lasting memories. In recognition of that significant step, we are highlighting students who have just completed their first semesters at ÈâÈ⴫ý State. Ty Poole, who is from Sandersville, Georgia, and plans to pursue a degree in public relations, shares what made his first semester as an Owl so meaningful.
The most beneficial aspect of my fall semester would be my support system that consists of my family and friends. They all pushed me to do my very best in my classes and always made sure I would be safe.
My greatest support this semester were my roommates and friends. My roommates and I would sometimes do work together. If someone needed help, one of us would be there to easily help. I would always have conversations with my roommates and friends about ÈâÈ⴫ý, like where stuff was and how to meet new people.
During my first semester, I was a KSU brand ambassador. In the coming semesters, I would like to get involved with a community service club and a social justice club at KSU.
I knew that KSU was the right choice for me when I got familiar with the location and I met plenty of new and different people. With whatever college I chose, I really wanted to be near the city, and I wanted it to be a bigger college. The expectation of being near the city held up well. I liked being almost 10 minutes away from everything compared to being almost 20 minutes away from things in my hometown. Also, there always felt like something to go visit or see near ÈâÈ⴫ý.
My favorite semester memories were getting to know my roommates whether it was getting to know the campus together or taking trips to get food in a packed vehicle.
The biggest challenge I encountered my first semester was living with people I didn’t know at first, but when we would sit and talk or play games in the common areas, we would get along great. I loved getting to know all the new people.
The biggest change was my major. I went in with my mind set on pursuing biology, but as I went on, I had a change of heart and chose public relations/communications. The main reason I switched is because of my aunt who works in public relations. For the majority of my teen years, I would help her with her work and see what she does. So I feel like that has really impacted me.
