⴫ý State to honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy

With the theme “Building Bridges not Barriers,” ⴫ý will host a week of activities honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Day, beginning with a virtual keynote address by the Rev. Harold Middlebrook.

As an undergraduate at Morehouse College in the 1960s, Middlebrook got involved with the civil rights movement and met the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the start of a deep friendship. Middlebrook was on the balcony at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis when King was shot and killed there in 1968. Middlebrook continued in his political activities while serving several pastorships in Tennessee and has appeared in documentary films about the civil rights movement.

The week continues with a Day of Service, a screening of the movie “Selma,” an MLK trivia event and more.

Rev. Harold Middlebrook is a retired pastor who worked with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movement of the 1960s and has continued his civil rights work through the present day.

The MLK Legacy Celebration will kick off a week of events at the University to honor the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and celebrate his legacy and impact of the Civil Rights Movement.

During KSU’s weeklong celebration, the campus community will participate in several activities, including a day of community service at various volunteer sites on Monday, Jan. 18, and a virtual reflection on Dr. King’s legacy – “Six Voices Celebrating Dr. King” – on Jan. 19.
