Zuckerman Museum of Art exhibit opens Feb. 2
The Bernard A. Zuckerman Museum of Art’s Spring 2019 exhibitions, “Louder than Words” and “Sahwa/Resurgence: Works by Hicham Berrada,” open on Saturday, Feb. 2. A free reception and special programming from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. features performances by Vanessa Yvonne Jagodinsky and by Katelyn Rose King of John Cage's “Water Walk.”
“Louder than Words” features artists who prefer silence (non-linguistic sounds, symbols or gestures) over words as their method of communication. The exhibition includes works on paper, video and sculpture, as well as performance works that emphasize the importance of the body as a vehicle for nonverbal expression. Four featured artists are deaf, and their work addresses issues of translation and the loss of information. “Louder than Words” also explores the power of silence as a form of protest. Teresa Bramlette Reeves, director of curatorial affairs, said, “This is a show where sound can be seen and felt as well as heard; where books don’t rely on words, and silence can be experienced as overwhelmingly powerful.”
Artists include Terry Adkins, Christopher Adler, Dara Birnbaum, John Cage, James Castle, Nick Cave, Joseph Grigley, Dana Haugaard, Sarah Hobbs, Vanessa Yvonne Jagodinsky, Katelyn Rose King, Christine Sun Kim, Alison O’Daniel, Yoko Ono, Alix Pearlstein, Trevor Reese, and Geo Sipp.
The reception will feature Katelyn Rose King’s recreation of John Cage’s “Water Walk,” and Vanessa Yvonne Jagodinsky will perform her work, “Candidate 23.” During the run of the exhibition, the museum will offer guided experimental tours. Created by artist/choreographer Nicole Livieratos, the tours highlight action and movement as a form of engaging with the work in the show.
The Zuckerman Museum of Art also presents a solo exhibition of Franco-Moroccan artist Hicham Berrada titled “Sahwa/Resurgence: Works by Hicham Berrada.” The six video works are located in the Henrique Atrium. The Arabic word sahwa—translated as resurgence—speaks to the transformation of the mundane into something eerily beautiful. This exhibition is presented as part of ý’s Year of Morocco programming.
The Spring 2019 exhibitions will run through May 5. To learn more, please visit .
