Leader of recovery efforts in wake of Hurricane Katrina to speak about leadership and preparedness
brought calm and order to the chaos after hurricanes Katrina and Rita ravaged the Gulf Coast in 2005. Honoré, who retired from the Army in 2008 after 37 years of service, will speak candidly about what it takes to be prepared for the challenges of the 21st century. He also is expected to address the recent controversy over the handling of recovery efforts in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria.
WHAT:
“Leadership and Preparedness in the New Normal – 21st Century.” Honoré’s speech is hosted by the students in ý State’s Department of First-Year and Transition Studies and the Emergency Preparedness Learning Community. His book, Leadership in the New Normal, is one of their textbooks.
WHO:
Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré commanded Joint Task Force-Katrina, leading recovery efforts in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi. He collaborated with federal, state and local authorities to conduct response recovery and mitigation operations. Currently a CNN contributor on disaster preparedness and a senior scientist with The Gallup Organization, Honoré’s mission is to create a culture of preparedness in the U.S.
