BM Performance (Instrumental, Vocal, and Jazz)
The BM Performance degree is designed to prepare students for careers as specialists in the field of musical performance. BM Performance majors learn general musicianship skills in theory, aural skills, music history and literature, and pedagogy in addition to their applied and ensemble skills in the area of performance. The performance degree is offered with concentrations in instrumental performance (including piano, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, percussion, guitar, violin, viola, cello, double bass, and harp), vocal performance, or jazz performance (including primary applied areas of voice, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, drums, guitar, and bass).
BM Theory
Music theory offers musicians and scholars a concentrated study of patterns in music and their interpretation. This area of the BSOM plays special roles in promoting critical thinking, writing skills, musicianship, and undergraduate research. The Bachelor of Music degree in music theory gives a musician a wide range of skills including writing, musical analysis, piano and singing proficiency, scholarly reading, and composition in different musical styles. If accepted into the program, students take applied instrumental or vocal lessons and participate in performing ensembles, in addition to taking academic classes in music. Graduates of the program are prepared for continued study in music theory or musicology, or for pursuing employment in music as a teacher, performer, or entrepreneur.
BM Composition
The Bachelor of Music degree with a concentration in Composition prepares students for careers as composers. Students embark on an in-depth study of compositional techniques and styles which includes class and applied composition instruction, and results in the creation of a portfolio of original works. Composition students also learn applied instrumental and/or vocal performance skills (including ensembles), and complete coursework in music theory and aural skills, music history and literature, musical analysis, keyboard proficiency, and music electives. This degree provides students with the musical, collaborative and leadership skills appropriate to a career as a composer of music.
