Excited gasps punctuated a Saturday afternoon in ÈâÈ⴫ý’s Engineering Technology Center as a crowd gathered around the unveiling of a new, permanent exhibit honoring the late Rev. Harris Travis. The unveiling took place during the second annual Hornets Homecoming, an event hosted by the Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU) Alumni Society honoring those who graduated from Southern Polytechnic State University.

ÈâÈ⴫ý’s Alumni Association received the 2024 Alumni Association Inclusive Excellence Award from Insight Into Diversity magazine, the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education. The Alumni Award honors alumni associations’ programs, culture, and initiatives that encourage and support diversity, inclusion and a sense of belonging for all alumni.

Anytime she’s wanted something in her life, Kim Amaya has worked to earn it with little help. The soon-to-be ÈâÈ⴫ý graduate arrived in the United States from El Salvador when she was only 3, and since a tender age, she’s been working to afford herself opportunities her parents didn’t get. Since transferring to KSU in 2022 to study modern language and culture, Amaya has continued to work a full-time job and a part-time job, or up to three part-time, as she looks forward to a teaching career.

This month, Mfon Okpok and Mahdiyeh Soltaninejad become the first two people to earn a doctorate in interdisciplinary engineering from ÈâÈ⴫ý’s Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology. The Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Engineering degree program was launched in the fall of 2021.

Ayse Tekes is a decorated researcher who has racked up an impressive collection of awards in her life. None are more meaningful to her than the 2024 Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor Award, given annually by the Office of Undergraduate Research to a KSU faculty or staff member who exhibits sustained exceptional mentoring of undergraduate researchers at KSU.

A total of 1,000 people and organizations donated $142,593 during ÈâÈ⴫ý’s inaugural Giving Day fundraising event. Supporters rained gifts on KSU to support a wide range of programs and activities, contributing more than seven times the $20,000 goal.

Iletha Dodds has always wanted to establish her own nail salon, but making the leap of faith felt too risky and daunting. The Marietta resident said taking care of her son and working full time as a court clerk made her dream seem improbable, so for years, she has settled on decorating the nails of family and friends as her creative outlet. That is, until she received an email detailing the Aspiring Community Entrepreneurs (ACE) program at ÈâÈ⴫ý. The ACE program launched in September 2023 through a partnership between ÈâÈ⴫ý State and Marietta-based MUST Ministries, a nonprofit fighting poverty, hunger and homelessness in the metro Atlanta area.
